Hello from Dr. John Spencer Ellis and OC Adventure Boot Camp

Here’s your quick reminder that camp starts on Monday!

Ok, now let’s talk about your personal goals.

Although you can talk about weight loss and fitness goals in an endless variety of ways, there are only three factors that really make a difference!

Are you ready?  Here they are…

Leverage: I’m not talking about leverage to pick up a heavy weight.  I’m referring to getting leverage on you.

You have to have a big enough “WHY” to get yourself motivated. Why must you drop 15 pounds, strength your abs or have more energy? The reasoning (or why) has to be biggest enough to compel you to take action every day.  When you ask yourself why, you have to feel absolutely compelled to move into action. A lackluster “why” will give you a lackluster body. If you are not associating enough displeasure with your current situation, you simply won’t take the needed actions. So, right now, think of how you will be adversely affected by not taking action (poor health, obesity, pain?).  In addition, think of all the wonderful benefits of taking immediate action (energy, good looks, and lower cholesterol). Get real with yourself! Be honest!

Focus: This is more than focusing on your goal of ______________ (fill in the blank).  It’s about focusing on everything that matters.

It’s not compulsion, just focus! Think of it as awareness. Focus on what you are eating; how you feel about food; your associations with food; when and why you eat, and even who you are as an eater.  Are you eating more because of spite, frustration, a relationship, boredom or sadness?  If so, this aspect of your wellness needs your attention and focus. And, I strongly suggest you come to my nutrition seminar on September 22 (Tuesday) at our office. There is no charge.

Focus also applies to breathing, posture, and movement while completing each exercise.  It all matters!

Consistency: I started exercising daily when I was 12 years old and have never taken more than one week off –EVER!

People often ask me how I can maintain a high level of fitness and motivation for so long (I’m 40).  The answer is consistency. Sure there are days, or even weeks, when intensity wavers.  This is normal and often good. However, for me and millions of others who have maintained proper weight and optimal health; consistency is the main factor.

When you have a day when sleeping in sounds more appealing than exercise, get up anyway and just do your exercises at a reduced intensity.  Obviously, illness is a different story. Rest when you are ill. The beauty of consistency is that it makes your overall goal of a lean, strong, good looking body much easier.

Going up and down in weight is very hard on your body. So, get on a schedule and stick to it!
