Spring Cleaning: 60 days to a New You

Does your inside, match your outside?

One of the things I love about the work that I do is that it’s all encompassing, and it helps people in several areas of their lives. Fitness isn’t just about being physically fit. It’s about your mind, body, and soul. If even one of those areas is off balance, your life will feel out of sync, because you are one being, and it’s important not to neglect any part of you.

As a fitness expert for decades, I’ve coached men and women to get themselves in the ultimate shape, from the inside out. Exercise is an important part of life, and how you fuel your body, affects your mind, the way you operate and function, and how well you can perform in all areas of your life. Your body is your temple, a machine, and how well you energize it and fuel it determines how well it works! It sounds simple, but if it were, the diet and fitness industry wouldn’t be as massive as it is today!

When someone wants to improve their physical fitness, there are often other areas that need improvement as well. Whether it’s an everyday person with a normal job or a television personality – we’re all human. We all have the same core issues and needs.

When I worked with one of the Real Housewives of Orange County cast members Jeanna Keough, I focused on the inside, as well as the outside. You have to take care of the feelings and emotions behind your physical self. It’s important not to overlook what is going on inside, if you want external changes because it’s all integrated.

Exercise is an important part of life, and it’s not coincidental that when you stop moving your body, your mind can get stagnant as well. Momentum is important, for power. One of the hallmarks of depression is an inactive lifestyle, and psychologists will tell you that it’s hard for someone who is depressed to think about moving. But moving is exactly what’s needed to lift your mood, and create the physical changes you desire.

One of the central themes of my new book The Compass, (with co-author Tammy Kling) is that there are peaks and valleys in everyone’s life. You’re a traveler on a journey, and sometimes the road is rough. There are moments when you have to take extra measures to get out of a ditch, a valley, or overcome an obstacle.

The first step…is self-awareness.

Does your inside, match your outside?

Even in the darkest valley of your life, it’s important to see the light, and reach for it. Often that’s the first step in mental and physical wellness. A relevant life lesson lies in the old weight lifting term no pain, no gain. This is the same way with emotional fitness. It’s all about assessing your strengths and weaknesses, and understanding how to get from where you are to where you want to be. How do you get out of debt, shed 50 pounds, and achieve the life of your dreams? It seems impossible when you’re in the pit of depression, or when you’re in debt, or when you’re overweight, or struggling. But it’s all possible, and I coach people how to take one day, and one step at a time to transform.

Action steps to a healthier new you.

Step 1: Take action in your life today.

You must be willing to let go of the life that you have (or some things within it) in order to grasp the life ahead of you, the life you are destined for! This lesson is about letting go, and moving on. It’s about taking action in order to live the life of your dreams!

Are there people, places, or even things you need to let go of? Make a list today and you’ll be amazed at how this one simple act ignites transformation. Once you do you are free to take action towards your dreams because you’re moving in the right direction, without any anchors or unnecessary baggage.

Step 2: Keep moving.

Movement is about creating inertia, in your body, mind and soul. When you move mentally, you create change. When you move physically, your external body transforms!

There is power, in movement.

Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and body. That increases the amount of oxygen and removes cellular waste products. Physical exercise causes the lungs to draw in extra oxygen to bathe the tissues and help power the heart. Exhalation removes carbon dioxide, and waste products from biochemical reactions. It’s the same when you exercise your mind and take steps towards your dreams. When you take action, instead of waiting to attract something, your life unfolds and things start to happen!

Step 3: Take a holistic approach

Don’t allow yourself to focus too much on one area, only. Give yourself a brief assessment. Are you in the best mental, and physical shape you could be in? If not, what can you do to change? Taking a moment to pause, and think about the condition of your body mind and soul, will help you stay balanced and healthy in all areas. Taking a holistic approach means understanding what’s out of balance in your life.

Step 4: Get into a routine

Successful people who live healthy lives have learned to incorporate some sort of routine in their day. Read a positive book each morning, even if it’s just a few paragraphs. This routine will help re-wire your brain for mental wellness, and set your thoughts ablaze!

Consistent, healthy patterns on a daily basis, create the foundation for real growth and success. Add physical and mental fitness to your schedule. Focus on your physical routine (exercise) as well as your mental routine (reading a positive book, affirmations, or studying something that will expand your mind).

Take these steps starting today, and you’ll find yourself healthier emotionally and physically, in 60 days. Do the hard work, and ask yourself the difficult questions. Remember..no pain,m no gain.

Are you satisfied with your progress in all quadrants of your life – physical, emotional and financial? If not, what’s holding you back? Find your compass, and get in sync. Take steps that will lead you to live the life of your dreams.

From the desk of Dr. John Spencer Ellis

Greetings friends, students and clients!

I hope you are enjoying this week.  Do you feel “spring in the air”?

Today’s message is to get you up to date on all the new happenings to enhance your life.

Since 1992, I have been helping people get fit and attain success.  And, yet, there always seems to be one thing that eludes most people.  FOOD! Or, at least, it’s our association with food.

It’s called Food and Eating Psychology!

Did You Know?

  • A majority of people who overeat think they have a “willpower problem” – but they really don’t. If you can’t seem to control your appetite, willpower is NOT your issue. The problem is, we don’t really eat when we eat – we forget to notice, taste, and enjoy our food. The brain interprets this missed experience of eating as “hunger” – and it drives us to eat more.
  • Approximately 98% of all people who lose weight on a weight loss diet gain it back within 1-2 years. When you question the 2% of people who keep that weight off long term, they have one fascinating thing in common – something powerful in their life story changed. This can mean a new career, letting go of an outdated relationship, embracing a new and positive one, moving to a new state, or changing their beliefs about who they are and how life works.
  • 40-60% of our metabolic power at any meal – meaning our ability to digest, assimilate and calorie burn – comes from something called the Cephalic Phase Digestive Response – which is a scientific term for taste, pleasure, aroma, satisfaction, and our visuals of a meal. So, doing the math, if we don’t receive this very intimate and subjective experience of eating, we are metabolizing at only 40-60% efficiency – a stunning statistic.
  • Pleasure is a nutritional requirement. All organisms on planet Earth are programmed at the most primitive level of nervous system physiology to “seek pleasure and avoid pain”. The problem is, when we aren’t receiving “Vitamin P” – pleasure from our food – perhaps because we’re following a punishing diet or not savoring our meals, the brain interprets this missed experience of pleasure as “hunger”, and we are driven to eat more.
  • When you eat is as important as what you eat. This is known as Bio- Circadian Nutrition. Simply put, we are designed to digest, assimilate and calorie burn most efficiently between the hours of 12:00-1:30pm. That’s why many traditional cultures wisely and instinctively have their biggest meal at mid-day. So, if you have a tiny breakfast, small or moderate lunch, and a huge dinner, you are setting up the ideal conditions for weight gain
  • Stress depletes nutrition. Simply put, anxiety, rushing, forcing, pushing, and negative self talk all put the body in the physiologic fight-or-flight response. In this stress state, vitamins and minerals are excreted, blood flow to the digestive organs dramatically decreases, calorie burning is slowed, and hormones that signal the body to gain weight are produced. Our mental/emotional state has powerfully influenced our nutritional metabolism, regardless of the good and healthy food we may have eaten

I have become so fascinated with this philosophy; I teamed up with its creator, Marc David to create an educational program for consumers, fitness professionals and life coaches.
